RCG-6. - The Roomberg Consulting Group's Six-Paragraph
Newsletter at www.Roomberg.com. Volume 1. Issue 7.
- Wednesday, March 05, 2003 In
this issue: Preventing Pressure Ulcers
6.1 A nasty part of our future? Almost all of us will
either eventually have a loved one in a nursing home (or long term
care facility,) or experience staying in such a place ourselves
for some period of time. One of risks faced by patients in
these facilities is the development of Pressure Ulcers (also known
as "bed sores). A pressure ulcer is formed when a bone (such
as the hip or heel,) rubs against the skin and destroys the tissue
it comes in contact with. The wound works it's way from the
bone outward to the skin. When a Pressure Ulcer finally erupts,
what is presented is an open wound that goes all the way down to
the bone.
6.2 Consider these facts:
- Depending on the facility, the incidence of Pressure Ulcers
among people age 65 and older can be more than twenty five percent
of the patient population!
- Every Pressure Ulcer stresses the immune system while providing
a potential point-of-entry for opportunistic diseases.
- Last year, Medicare spent more than 1.1 billion dollars
to treat pressure ulcers.
- Due to low reimbursements by Medicare, it is not unusual
for nursing homes to lose thousands of dollars on every Pressure
Ulcer they treat.
- Pressure Ulcer related lawsuits are the number one source
of litigation against nursing homes.
- The conventional point-of-view is that nursing homes could
only prevent Pressure Ulcers if they were funded to have many
more staff than they will ever have.
6.3 Enter the Government and Government Prosecutors: The
federal government has had enough with both the monetary costs and
the associated human suffering. This summer, new regulations
will come into effect that require better PREVENTION of pressure
ulcers by nursing homes. These changes create a role for the
CDC- Centers for Disease Control to inspect and prosecute nursing
home facilities who fail to provide adequate care for their patients.
(In the past, these inspections and prosecutions were generally
on the state level. Ignorance of the new, stricter
regulations will be no excuse when the inspectors come knocking
at the door.
6.4 We Offer A Solution The Roomberg Consulting Group
has been working with multiple companies to develop a Wound Management
System that can reduce the incidence of Pressure Ulcers between
60% and 80% with proper use. This system includes four major
components. First, a 20 Mhz high-resolution portable scanner
to detect if even a microscopic pocket of fluid has formed at the
bone, enabling immediate preventative measures to be taken. Second,
a HIPAA-compliant web-based data storage facility to permanently
and securely store patient ultrasound images and other data as well.
Third, a comprehensive training, testing, and certification
program to insure facilities use the technology properly. Fourth,
RCG has obtained thirty million dollars of financing from Patriot
Bank, to make the technology available on a rental or lease basis.
6.5 Tested By Experts The 20Mhz high-resolution portable
scanners are both patented and FDA-approved. They were tested
at the Mayo Clinic, Yale Medical Center, and at the St. Agnes Burn
Center. Doctors ranging from podiatrists to surgeons are already
using this technology and being reimbursed by insurance using this
for needle-guided procedures such as the precise delivery of medication
or the removal of small cysts.
6.6 Details At Our Seminar The RCG-Wound Management
System is available in North America only through RCG. We
are now recruiting manufacturer's representatives nationwide. We
will officially present the product to the world in a seminar at
Virtua Hospital, in Voorhees, New Jersey, on Tuesday, April 8th.
(Voorhees, NJ, is about between thirty and forty minutes from Center
City, Philadelphia.) The seminar will include the industry's
three top Pressure Ulcer treatment experts, Doctors Lyder,
Dyson, and Quintavalle. You can read their bios online at http://www.roomberg.com/base/rcgwps/index.html
