 GORDON “DUCKY” MC CARTHY

This BIO of Gordon “Ducky” McCarthy is submitted in memory of a fellow classmate with the Irish name McCarthy. Donald J. McCarthy

Although Ducky and I were not considered close friends in high school, I consider him a fellow Irishman and classmate, and I therefore contribute this biography.

Ducky grew up in Lansdowne with his mother, Florence, a widow, and his older brother, George. My sister, Pat, was a 1949 LHS classmate of George’s. (Note LHS not LAHS at that time.)

Unfortunately, Ducky’s high school experience was interrupted by a serious automobile accident. The injury to his legs and the long recovery period did not allow him to participate in many of his junior and senior year activities. He received tutoring at home and later graduated from LAHS.

One memory of Ducky was his great interest in Russia, and his desire to learn and speak the language. Obviously, he was someone who was ahead of most of us at that time.

Ducky remained in Lansdowne, married, and I believe had children. Ducky’s health, for most of his life, was not the best due to the automobile accident in high school. Several years ago my sister mailed me a local newspaper article about Ducky that emphasized what an international communicator he was by corresponding with people all over the world.

Ducky has passed away and I’m sure that his family and his many friends, locally and internationally, miss him.
