Several times a year Ken and I will be reminded of Miss McCullough. We both remember that she had our English classes write an essay on the topic “ The Pleasure of Recognition”. Neither of us can remember exactly what we wrote or how much serious or insightful thought we gave to the topic. After all, we were seventeen years of age. What we do know is how frequently this theme has occurred to us as we have traveled far and wide not only literally but as we have traveled through life. How many times have you read about a person or place or seen a picture in the news, in a movie or on TV that is of a place you have visited or a person you have met? How many times have you first seen a picture of an area, read or heard of a place or person and then had the opportunity for a pleasure of recognition moment? I believe that I can now say we have some understanding of what she meant and was trying to get teenagers to understand. Many times in our lives we have enjoyed “The Pleasure of Recognition”.
